Dear Parents / Carers,

As part of our Extended Schools work, we are looking at the possibility of running some adult education classes in conjunction with New College Nottingham. All of the courses would be run within school using NCN trainers and resources. The fee for the courses has not yet been decided but would be in the range of £2 - £4 per session and reductions may be available to those claiming benefits.

To help us identify which courses and times would be of interest to you, we would be grateful if could complete a short survey. If we have enough interest, then we will work with NCN to provide those courses which are most popular.

Please return the enclosed survey by Friday 16th May, to the school office, even if you are not interested as this will help to inform our decisions.

Many thanks for your time in completing this survey.

Yours

Dear Parents/Carers,

Summer Fair – Saturday 14th June 10am – 12 noon

We have now set the date for the Summer Fair so please put this date in your diaries as it is our main fund-raising event of the year – and always fun rain or shine!

We would like to hold a planning meeting to organise the fair on Thursday 17th April at 7pm at school. The Fair cannot take place without substantial help from parent/carer volunteers so please, please come along and share your ideas.

If you cannot attend but are able to be involved in any way please note this on the slip below.

As a volunteer parent Chair or Friends of Westdale I have enjoyed organising fundraising but we have struggled of late for parent support.

I shall be finishing this summer as my son is in Year 6 and events cannot go ahead without more parents becoming involved.

Please send the reply slip to school by Tuesday 15th April.

Yours sincerely,
Rosemary Stewart

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome back and a big thank you for the warm welcome that I have received over the last few days. It has been a real pleasure meeting you and your children.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Year 3 children. They have already begun to settle in to school and are making a very positive first impression on their teachers.

We are in the process of putting together our extra curricular activities timetable and will let you know further details of this as soon as possible.

Together with this letter you should receive a copy of our Home School Agreement. Please read through this with your child and then sign and return it to school.

We are also sending home tonight the Scholastic Book magazine. The Scholastic scheme helps to raise valuable funds for school and enables us to purchase additional books for our library. If you wish to make a purchase please send the order form and payment into school before Friday 21st September.

If anyone is interested in joining our morning reading team then please contact the school for more details.

Below, you will find some initial dates for your diary for this term.

Many thanks once again for all your support and I and all the staff look forward to working with you over the coming year.

Yours sincerely

Victoria Hayles

Dear Parent/Carer,

Wheldon Year 6 Sports day. Unfortunately Wheldon have had to cancel the sports day arranged for this Friday. Year 6 pupils will now stay in school here.

Attendance. Our attendance figures are dropping significantly as we go towards the end of term. Please ensure you have completed a holiday form if you are taking your child away before we break up. All absences count towards the school’s record for the year and are examined by the Educational Welfare department and Ofsted.

Airborne Challenge Final. Unfortunately due to the flooding in Sheffield the Year 6 Airborne Challenge has been cancelled. It will take place at the end of September but our current team will have moved on to their secondary schools so will not be able to take part.

Dance Class. Next Wednesday will be the last dance class for this year but it will start again on Wednesday 11th September. Further details will follow.

PARENT READERS FOR NEXT YEAR. Many of our current Parent Reading Partners are leaving us at the end of this term as their children are moving on to secondary school. This has been one of our most successful initiatives and it would be a great shame if it was to close. If you think you could help out next term, at the beginning of any school day for about 15 – 20 minutes, please let Mrs Stones, Mrs Day or Mrs Kitt know.

Next Year’s Teachers.

Teachers next year will be:-

Year 3 Mrs Day Mrs Shepherd

Year 4 Miss Birkett Mrs Roberts/Mrs Tupholme

Year 5 Mr Caldwell Miss Turville

Year 6 Mr Jennings Miss Kilbane

Your children will visit their new teachers on Thursday morning.

Dear Parent/Carer,

SUMMER FAIR - THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A HUGE Thank-you to all of you who came to the Fair last Saturday. Even though the weather was disappointing everyone seemed to have a good time. We raised £ 1,000 some of which will be spent on a set of collapsible tables so we don’t have to borrow the children’s tables from their classrooms for future events. They will be used for lots of different activities organised for and by both parents and children.

Special thanks go to everyone who helped on the Friday afternoon and the Saturday as well as to The Friends of Westdale who organised the whole thing, to the pupils in Year 6 who designed and constructed the games, to all the school staff who gave up their time and to Mr Gregory who organised the cleaning up afterwards.

We have one unclaimed raffle prize. The ticket number is PINK 712. If you have the winning ticket, please bring it to the office and claim your prize.

Healthy Schools’ Gold Award. We are being presented with our Gold Award at a special assembly tomorrow morning. We were assessed in six different areas:- Personal, Social and Health education, Drugs education, Sex and Relationships education, Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Emotional Health and Well-being education and achieved them all.

GOOD LUCK. Good luck to our Road Safety Team who will be taking part in the Gedling Area final on Wednesday evening at County Hall.

INSET DAYS – The school will be closed this Friday and next Monday for teacher training days. It will re-open on the following Tuesday at 8.50a.m. as normal.

Thank you again for your continuous support of the school

Dear Parent/Carer,

SUMMER FAIR. We are hoping for good weather on Saturday morning but even if it is raining the Fair will go ahead inside the school so PLEASE COME ALONG. We have another ‘famous,’ visitor joining us. Jo from ‘Jo and Twiggy’ will join us about 11.00a.m. and will draw the raffle at 11.30a.m. All raffle prizes are on display in the reception area. Tickets are available from the office and will also be available at the fair. They are priced at 20p each or £1 for a strip of 5. If you are not able to come to the fair but have bought a winning ticket your prize will be kept for you.

If you are sending in plants or cakes for selling at the fair please send them in tomorrow ( Friday) or Saturday morning. Stall holders should be at school at around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, if at all possible. Year 6 pupils should also be here at 9.30a.m. to set up their games.

Special thanks in advance are given to the Friends of Westdale, some of whom have spent many hours coordinating the event and collecting items, prizes etc. We could not hold the fair without them.

CRICKET COMPETITION. Congratulations to our school cricket team who were runners up in the final of the competition yesterday losing to Arno Vale by only 8 runs. Well done to all who took part and thanks to Mr Bannister for coaching them.

INSET DAYS. A reminder that school will be closed to the children on FRIDAY 22nd JUNE and MONDAY 25th JUNE for teacher training days. It will re-open again on Tuesday 26th June at the normal time of 8.50a.m.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parent/Carer,

Arts Week. Once again our Arts Week has been a great success and we hope all of the children have enjoyed it. I am sure they have all had something to tell you about when they have arrived home.

Summer Fair. Our Summer Fair is coming soon. It will be held at school on Saturday 16th June between 10.00a.m. and 12.00noon. Please put the date in your diary and come along and support us. If you have any items we can sell at the fair please start sending them in as soon as possible after the half term holiday. We will also be asking for helpers to man the stalls on the day and to get the fair ready on the Friday afternoon before.

If anyone has any items you can donate as raffle prizes they will be most welcome. We will be having a non-uniform day on Friday June 8th when children will be asked to donate a prize for the tombola stall ( e.g. chocolates, sweets, cosmetics, shampoos, bath or shower gel etc. in fact anything you would like to win.)

Next Year’s SATs. I know many of you are busy booking your holidays for 2008 so I am asking you to please avoid booking the week including Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May which will be SATs week for the whole school. This is particularly important for next years Year 6 pupils.

Tennis Balls!!!! We are having a lot of problems with children disputing the ownership of tennis balls in the playground and this is leading to unacceptable bullying and/or abusive behaviour. Until recently Mrs. Stones has been marking children’s balls with their names in permanent marker pen but we can no longer provide this service as we have had pupils collecting unmarked balls from the playground and having their names put on balls which they know are not theirs. After half term children will have to bring balls at their own risk but it would be really helpful if you could put your child’s name on the ball before they bring it to school.

School closes today at 3.20p.m. for one week’s holiday and we will re-open on Monday June 4th at 8.50a.m. Enjoy your break!!!

Yours sincerely,
